Your Hebrew Language Site
LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SUBSCRIBE TO A COMPREHENSIVE SERIES OF HEBREW LESSONS ON THIS WEB SITE, BEGINNING FROM LEARNING THE ALPHABET AND CONTINUING ON TO A COMPETENT LEVEL OF READING AND SPEAKING HEBREW
Even if you are an individual in a remote rural setting with no access to a Hebrew speaker, you can learn Hebrew and learn it well. How can this be? Most languages have a spoken vocabularly between 2000-2500 words. This is the vocabulary of a student who has finished an Ulpan - Hebrew language school - in Israel. This allows one to get by in the street, in stores, banks, etc. However, this level does not provide the ability to follow the Hebrew news on television, read books in Hebrew, or attend lectures in Hebrew. In Israel, this limited vocabulary also means lower-level jobs and prevents advancement in a given job.
The reading vocabulary of a well-educated person, in most languages, is at least ten times the spoken vocabulary. One of the inhibitions for educated people to speak in a second language is their awareness that they have a limited vocabulary; they do not want to sound uneducated.
How does one build vocabularly? The answer of course is reading. Many people have learned languages while imprisoned - never hearing a word of the language they are studying. This site can provide reading material accompanied by detailed teaching of all aspects of the Hebrew language. All of the lessons would be available on-line all of the time, so the individual studying alone can learn at his/her own pace. The lessons would be helpful to those studying privately or in a school setting. The lessons will also be helpful for teachers who are teaching in a setting without adequate back-up support.
Most web sites and cassette Hebrew-learning methods teach a very limited vocabulary, not even taking the student to the level of one who has finished an Ulpan in Israel. There are many English-speakers who have lived in Israel for 20-30 years who have only the basic spoken vocabulary they learned in Ulpan. If one hears them speaking, they may sound very fluent and accomplished. However, at this level, they are basically illiterate. This site is for serious students who wish to learn the Hebrew language well. Using the MASKILON set along with lessons on this site can provide a higher level of learning. There is no sound; it is not needed. If you can read the news or a book in Hebrew, without even having heard a word of Hebrew, once you are in a setting to hear Hebrew, it will take little time to adjust to your surroundings and speak Hebrew fluently. The converse is not true - those people who have lived in Israel many years, yet do not listen to news or lectures in Hebrew, and do not read in Hebrew, would require a much longer time to get to a higher level. Of course, most students using this on-line lesson series also have access to a teacher or to tapes so that they can attune their ear to Hebrew while they learn. No matter how good the teaching material, there are always questions. Those enrolled in the lessons would have unlimited access to expert help via e-mail.
The use of the on-line Maskilon III (Hebrew-English) and Maskilon IV (English-Hebrew) are available without cost for people who simply want to look up a word.
A subscription to the lesson series would cost $75.00 per year. We need only to know if there is an adequate demand to hire a qualified Hebrew-language teacher who would dedicate full-time to the on-line learning. If you would like to subscribe to an on-line learning series, please fill out the form. You are not committing to anything at this time, only expressing an interest.
